What is Keto-Adaptation?

A woman eating a salad in a fitness studioKeto-adaptation, also called fat-adaptation, is the process of your body switching from using glucose for energy to using fat during a ketogenic diet. Though our bodies usually use a mix of fat and glucose for its energy, in a non-ketosis state the body will opt for glucose first. The brain is dependent on glucose before ketosis, which is why many people experience a “carb crash” on low-carb diets. It is when the storage of glucose runs low that the body starts the process of keto-adaptation.

The length of this adaptation to utilizing fat storage for energy varies for each individually. The process will begin after the first few days of switching to a ketogenic diet, and after around one week to ten days, people on the diet will start to experience the positive effects. Some of these effects include improved mental concentration and focus, more physical energy, and normalized blood pressure and blood sugar.

After two to three weeks, the body should be fully adapted to using fat for energy instead of glucose. At this point, hunger and good cravings are diminished, and most people state they experience much more physical energy.

How the Body Burns Fat

On most Western or Mediterranean diets, the body burns sugar produced by carbs to get its energy. The body only starts to reach into the fat cells for energy when it is low on sugar and enters what is called ketosis. This state can be great for those looking to lose weight and can be achieved on the low carb, high fat keto diet.

During ketosis, your liver works to break down fatty acids into compounds called ketone bodies. Though most of your body’s cells can absorb fatty acids for energy, your brain relies on these ketone bodies to transmit the energy in usable form. When on the keto diet, you can convince your body to switch gears to ketosis for fat burning instead of the usual sugar burning process.
