How Ketosis Can Help Ease Arthritis Pain

Man with arthritis pain in his wristOne of the many great things about the keto diet is that it is anti-inflammatory, which improves the body’s ability to heal and protect itself. Through ketosis, many people are now able to manage and reduce symptoms related to inflammation, including conditions such as arthritis.

Ketosis reduces inflammation by limiting excess sugar in the diet, halting the surge of insulin that is produced by unregulated blood sugar levels. Many chronic diseases, such as nerve damage, arthritis, and diabetes, all come with a high amount of inflammation in the body. When you live with a condition resulting from inflammation, a ketogenic diet will help do the following:

  • Decrease nervous system activity, thus relieving pain perception
  • Decrease reactive oxygen species that contribute to inflammation
  • Increase adenosine, a natural chemical that fights inflammation and acts as a pain reliever

Due to these responses, a keto diet can successfully help reduce the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis and other chronic conditions. This will help make the disease much more manageable on a daily basis.

The Dangers of Processed Carbs

Loaves of white breadNot all carbs are created equal, and though some of them can be good for you, it is the processed carbohydrates that you need to watch out for. A carbohydrate is considered processed or refined when the food is stripped of all of its nutritional value. A clear indicator of a refined carb is products made from white flour, white sugar, or high fructose corn syrup.

Below are just some of the adverse effects processed carbs can have on the body.

Metabolic disruption: When you eat foods with fiber and nutritional value, your body has to work harder to break them down. When you eat processed carbs, your body treats them as sugar, allowing them to be absorbed quickly. This forces your pancreas to go into overdrive, producing much more insulin to counter your rising blood glucose levels. Not only does this drastically stress your liver, but it can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes, and visceral fat accumulation.

Hormonal imbalances: Another danger of processed carbs is an increased risk of hormone disruption, especially in women. As these carbs are processed by the body, a hormonal response is triggered. This response can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and chronic fatigue.

Cardiovascular disease: The more refined carbs you consume, the bigger strain you’re putting on your heart. These carbs promote inflammation, which is incredibly bad for your heart. They also contain a large amount of sugar and unhealthy fats, putting you at a higher risk of having a heart attack if you consume too much on a regular basis.

If you are interested in limiting your carbohydrate intake, look to Figure Savers Weight Loss & Diet Center for keto weight loss in Maryland. We will help you lose weight and learn how to maintain a healthy, happy body.

What is Keto-Adaptation?

A woman eating a salad in a fitness studioKeto-adaptation, also called fat-adaptation, is the process of your body switching from using glucose for energy to using fat during a ketogenic diet. Though our bodies usually use a mix of fat and glucose for its energy, in a non-ketosis state the body will opt for glucose first. The brain is dependent on glucose before ketosis, which is why many people experience a “carb crash” on low-carb diets. It is when the storage of glucose runs low that the body starts the process of keto-adaptation.

The length of this adaptation to utilizing fat storage for energy varies for each individually. The process will begin after the first few days of switching to a ketogenic diet, and after around one week to ten days, people on the diet will start to experience the positive effects. Some of these effects include improved mental concentration and focus, more physical energy, and normalized blood pressure and blood sugar.

After two to three weeks, the body should be fully adapted to using fat for energy instead of glucose. At this point, hunger and good cravings are diminished, and most people state they experience much more physical energy.

What You Need in a Diet Center

When trying to get healthy and lose weight, choosing the right weight loss center is key to your success.  At Figure Savers we try to give you the best that Ideal Protein has to offer.  Some clinics will just sell you their products and they are not very involved with you and your weight loss experience.  Coaching should be an integral part of any weight loss experience, and Figure Savers takes training of its coaches very seriously.  Figure Savers coaches are all former Ideal Protein dieters!  They know  what it’s like!  There are several reasons coaching is important.

First, accountability is so important when you are preparing your meals and when you are being tempted by a treat that you are not supposed have.   When you know that you are going to have to explain what you ate to a health coach, you will be less inclined to deviate from your diet plan.  Sticking to the plan will help you get the best results.

Second, education!  Your health coach should be educating you at every visit.  You should learn something new each time.  You might learn something about yourself – like recognizing that eating at night while watching TV was just a bad habit and you are able to kick it!  Or, you might learn that nuts generally have all three macro-nutrients- protein, fats and carbohydrates.  The more you know about the physiology of weight loss, the easier it will be.

Third, planning!  Your health coach ought to be helping you plan for your upcoming week.  Maybe  you have a big event coming up and you need help avoiding Aunt Marge who will undoubtedly tell you you can’t leave the party until you’ve had cake and ice cream.  Maybe sticking to some aspect of the plan is difficult for your lifestyle.  Your coach can help you adjust the plan enough that it is still within the protocol parameters, but it will fit into your time schedule.

Finally, sharing your success!  There is no one happier (other than yourself) to see you hit your weight loss and health goals than your Figure Savers coach.   We love hearing our Goal Bell ring!  It is music to our ears!

How the Body Burns Fat

Glass scale with blue tape measureBurning fat is something our bodies are primed to do throughout the day. Fat burning occurs when you are performing any physical activity, from a rigorous 1-hour training session to taking 15 minutes to clean out your closet. The keto diet is known for kicking fat burning into high gear, but what is happening when your body burns fat for energy?

On most Western or Mediterranean diets, the body burns sugar produced by carbs to get its energy. The body only starts to reach into the fat cells for energy when it is low on sugar and enters what is called ketosis. This state can be great for those looking to lose weight and can be achieved on the low carb, high fat keto diet.

During ketosis, your liver works to break down fatty acids into compounds called ketone bodies. Though most of your body’s cells can absorb fatty acids for energy, your brain relies on these ketone bodies to transmit the energy in usable form. When on the keto diet, you can convince your body to switch gears to ketosis for fat burning instead of the usual sugar burning process.

If you are interested in learning more about ketosis and how it can benefit your weight loss goals, contact our Columbia weight loss center today at (443) 840-7818. Figure Savers utilizes Ideal Protein products to provide a personalized weight loss solution for all of our clients.

The Dangers of Visceral Fat

Woman eating breadMany times, body fat is viewed as something we want to remove to look and feel better, but the health risks of certain types of fat are often overlooked. Visceral fat is an excess gel-like form of fat that forms deep in the abdominal tissue. This kind of fat can be very dangerous, as it wraps around major organs such as the liver, pancreas, and kidneys.

Visceral fat is mainly identified by a protruding belly and large waist, but anyone can have some stored away whether it is visible or not. Carrying around excess weight is never good, but this particular type of fat can change how your body functions. Visceral fat is toxic and can provoke inflammation and interfere with hormonal functions. It also comes with an increased risk for a variety of conditions, such as coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke, dementia, diabetes, sleep disorders, and more.

How Does Visceral Fat Develop?

Blood sugar levels play a significant role in how your brain and body communicate about food. When there’s too much glucose in our system, the excess becomes stored as fat. The excess sugar from processed starches and sugary foods trigger the pancreas to release more insulin than necessary. This results in weight gain and an increased feeling of being hungry, particularly for sweets.

Visceral fat storage is primarily caused by consuming more calories than necessary, sex and growth hormone imbalances, and excessive dietary fructose. Combat this unhealthy body fat before it is too late by signing up for the Ideal Protein weight loss program available at Figure Savers Weight Loss & Diet Center. We will help you obtain the body you have always dreamed of while improving your overall health in the process.

Weight loss support groupWhen things are going well for you, sticking to your weight-loss commitment program may feel easy. You may even feel inspired and energized by your new behaviors. But if daily life throws you a curve ball, you may get knocked off track and feel stressed. Those old habits—like coping with your anxiety or worries by eating sweets—may quickly surface.

When you feel the slightest bit stressed is the time to pick up the phone and call a friend from your support system. He or she can share with you what they did to get through the rough patches without slipping back into destructive eating habits.

3 Essential Components of any Weight Loss Plan, Part 1

woman’s feet on glass scaleWhen it comes to weight loss plans in Howard County, MD, there are thousands of diets out there are stating they are guaranteed to be the one for you. Though all of these plans are developed to appeal to a variety of target ages and lifestyles, there are three things that any solid, successful diet plan must focus on: goal planning, craving management, and a support system.

The Right Goal for the Right Mindset

Weight loss is more than eating fewer calories and going into it with a goal of “to lose weight” is setting you up for failure. Dig deeper and develop a clear-cut goal for yourself, such as “lose 50 pounds before the wedding” or “weigh 140 pounds by the end of the year” so you can actively work towards that goal as time goes on. If you’d rather not focus on exact numbers, you can set your goals based on certain clothing sizes you hope to be able to fit into down the road.

Losing weight for good isn’t easy, but setting a clear goal for your journey can help you stay in the proper mindset. If you’re not focused on your goal or allow yourself too many cheat days, you’ll soon be right back where you started. At Figure Savers weight loss clinic, we can help you find the mental tools you need to lose weight and keep it off.
