What to Do When You Experience “Ketosis Breath”

Mint and other essential oilsWhen following a low-carb diet, there is one potential side effect that no one wants: bad breath. Often referred to as “ketosis breath,” the smell of acetone or ammonia on your breath can be upsetting. Fortunately, it is not a permanent side effect of keto weight loss in Maryland.

What Causes Ketosis Breath?

Though there are many reasons as to why you might be experiencing a case of bad breath, the switch to a low-carb diet may produce acetone or ammonia smells in your mouth. As you cut carbs from your diet, your body starts using more fat for energy. This process creates molecules called ketones, which can be excreted through your breath.

How to Treat Keto-Breath?

Though this odd smell may be unpleasant, it is not forever and will often disappear a few weeks to a few months after you start your low carb diet. Below are four things you can do to help remedy the smell in the meantime.

  • er: Drinking more water throughout the day will help wash the smell out of your mouth.
  • Use natural breath fresheners: Mint, parsley, cloves, cinnamon, and fennel seeds all have natural compounds that can freshen your breath.
  • Breath capsules: Some health stores create “breath capsules” filled with parsley oil to help remedy this particular type of bad breath.
  • Mints or gum: Sugar-free mints or gum can be used in a pinch, just be sure to keep an eye on the carbs they contain.

3 Myths about Weight Loss

Even the most well-intentioned dieter can fall victim to weight loss myths, resulting in their entire diet being ruined. When friends, the internet, and even some publications constantly repeat specific “facts,” it is easy to start believing them yourself. Below are three myths about weight loss that you should not buy into for success.

  1. Diets Do Not Work

Many people will avoid basic diets tactics, such as calorie counting because it “doesn’t work.” If one diet program does not work, that should not have you ruling out all diets. Figure Savers offers one of the best Howard County weight loss programs that is effective and helps you keep the weight off for good.

  1. Eat Small, Frequent Meals

Eating smaller meals and snacks every few hours may help you slim down, but it is not always the most effective method. As we increase the number of times we eat, we also increase our body’s desire to eat. This hunger increase can result in unnecessary calories and discomfort throughout your day.

  1. Healthy Eating is Easy

For some new dieters, it can be hard to accept that losing weight is hard work. With so many diet programs promoting quick and easy fixes, we lose sight of the long-term goals and lifestyle changes associated with permanent weight loss.

Common Myths about Low Carb Diets

When people think of low-carb diets, they often think of boring, unhealthy eating plans that include no fruits or vegetables and a huge increase in unhealthy fats. The truth, however, is that a low-carb diet in Howard County, MD, can be very beneficial for weight loss. Below are three common myths about low-carb diets.

Myth #1: Low Carb = No Carb

Many people think that a low-carb diet really means eliminating all carbs. Whole carbs are necessary for your body, and low-carb diets simply adjust the target levels for carbohydrates, not get rid of them.

Myth #2: No Fruits and Vegetables

Since many of the calories in some fruits or vegetables come from carbohydrates, many people think they are not allowed at all in these diet plans. The opposite is actually true. These vegetables and low-carb fruits are the primary sources of carbs eaten on these diet plans.

Myth #3: Low-Carb Diets Cause Heart Disease

Low-carb diets have a variety of health benefits, including improving blood pressure, cholesterol, and other heart disease markers. Even plans that contain a lot of protein and animal fat have not been proven to raise the risk of heart disease.

What is Keto Adaptation?

Woman standing on a scale with a measuring tapeA ketogenic diet is designed to significantly minimize the number of carbohydrates you eat and increase the level of healthy fats. As your carbohydrate levels fall, your body is forced to burn stored fat as fuel instead, which results in weight loss.

Keto-adaptation is the process your body goes through as it changes from using carbs to fat for energy. Though your body is always using a mixture of the two for energy, it tends to reach for glucose, or carbs, first when in a non-keto-adapted state. As your body enters ketosis, it starts to reach for fat instead, causing quicker weight loss than many other diet plans.

Though this short process of entering a keto-adapted state can often be somewhat long and unpleasant, the benefits you experience once the switch has been made are well worth it. At Figure Savers Diet & Weight Loss Center, our Ideal Protein weight loss program helps you achieve this state while still feeling full and energized.

The Dangers of High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance in your blood that is vital to the healthy function of the body. However, too much cholesterol in your blood can be dangerous. There are two types of cholesterol – HDL, your good cholesterol, and LDL, the “bad” cholesterol. 25% of the cholesterol in your blood comes from food, meaning that the less healthy you eat, the higher your LDL levels are likely to be.

The Dangers of High LDL

  • Too much bad cholesterol in your blood can build up in your arteries, causing heart disease, heart attack, and stroke over time.
  • It can also affect your hormone production, causing a variety of thyroid problems.
  • LDL can have adverse effects on your nervous system, as it is disrupting blood flow to the brain and can even accelerate the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • High cholesterol can cause painful gallstones to form in your gallbladder.

How to Lower Your Cholesterol

How to Reduce Your Blood Sugar Levels

When you have diabetes, your blood sugar levels are your primary concern. High blood sugar levels can be hazardous if they are not well managed, leading to short- and long-term issues. As a person with diabetes, keeping your blood sugar at your target level avoids serious effects such as vision impairment, infections, kidney failure, and strokes.

How to Lower Your Blood Sugar

The first thing you want to do is to ensure you are closely monitoring your blood sugar levels. They usually do not cause any symptoms until they reach 200 mg/dL or over. How frequently you should check your levels will depend on the individual, but it is important to be checking several times a day to ensure you are on the right track.

Reduce Your Carb Intake

Low-carb diets, such as the keto diet in Howard County, MD, will help to reduce and maintain your blood sugar levels. Since the body breaks down carbohydrates into sugars, this can cause your levels to spike if you are indulging in too much bread or pasta. Some carbohydrates are a necessity in any diet, so it is essential to ensure you are eating simple carbs such as whole grain oats and sweet potatoes.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight will help reduce the effects of diabetes on your life. Loosing or maintaining your weight will also improve your cholesterol and overall well-being. How Ketosis Can Help Ease Arthritis Pain

One of the many great things about the keto diet is that it is anti-inflammatory, which improves the body’s ability to heal and protect itself. Through ketosis, many people are now able to manage and reduce symptoms related to inflammation, including conditions such as arthritis.

Ketosis reduces inflammation by limiting excess sugar in the diet, halting the surge of insulin that is produced by unregulated blood sugar levels. Many chronic diseases, such as nerve damage, arthritis, and diabetes, all come with a high amount of inflammation in the body. When you live with a condition resulting from inflammation, a ketogenic diet will help do the following:

  • Decrease nervous system activity, thus relieving pain perception
  • Decrease reactive oxygen species that contribute to inflammation
  • Increase adenosine, a natural chemical that fights inflammation and acts as a pain reliever

Due to these responses, a keto diet can successfully help reduce the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis and other chronic conditions. This will help make the disease much more manageable on a daily basis.

The Dangers of Processed Carbs

Loaves of white breadNot all carbs are created equal, and though some of them can be good for you, it is the processed carbohydrates that you need to watch out for. A carbohydrate is considered processed or refined when the food is stripped of all of its nutritional value. A clear indicator of a refined carb is products made from white flour, white sugar, or high fructose corn syrup.

Below are just some of the adverse effects processed carbs can have on the body.

Metabolic disruption: When you eat foods with fiber and nutritional value, your body has to work harder to break them down. When you eat processed carbs, your body treats them as sugar, allowing them to be absorbed quickly. This forces your pancreas to go into overdrive, producing much more insulin to counter your rising blood glucose levels. Not only does this drastically stress your liver, but it can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes, and visceral fat accumulation.

Hormonal imbalances: Another danger of processed carbs is an increased risk of hormone disruption, especially in women. As these carbs are processed by the body, a hormonal response is triggered. This response can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and chronic fatigue.

Cardiovascular disease: The more refined carbs you consume, the bigger strain you’re putting on your heart. These carbs promote inflammation, which is incredibly bad for your heart. They also contain a large amount of sugar and unhealthy fats, putting you at a higher risk of having a heart attack if you consume too much on a regular basis.

If you are interested in limiting your carbohydrate intake, look to Figure Savers Weight Loss & Diet Center for keto weight loss in Maryland. We will help you lose weight and learn how to maintain a healthy, happy body.

What is Keto-Adaptation?

A woman eating a salad in a fitness studioKeto-adaptation, also called fat-adaptation, is the process of your body switching from using glucose for energy to using fat during a ketogenic diet. Though our bodies usually use a mix of fat and glucose for its energy, in a non-ketosis state the body will opt for glucose first. The brain is dependent on glucose before ketosis, which is why many people experience a “carb crash” on low-carb diets. It is when the storage of glucose runs low that the body starts the process of keto-adaptation.

The length of this adaptation to utilizing fat storage for energy varies for each individually. The process will begin after the first few days of switching to a ketogenic diet, and after around one week to ten days, people on the diet will start to experience the positive effects. Some of these effects include improved mental concentration and focus, more physical energy, and normalized blood pressure and blood sugar.

After two to three weeks, the body should be fully adapted to using fat for energy instead of glucose. At this point, hunger and good cravings are diminished, and most people state they experience much more physical energy.
